Hot and Dry

Listening to: Alison Krauss You're Just a Country Boy

The last week temps have hovered around 90, and nary a drop of rain. The garden is starting to look a bit parched even though Ron has watered it (especially the 'maters!). Something has been getting into the first planting of sweet corn and destroyed at least 90% of it, tearing the immature ears open at the top, shredding the shucks and eating out just the tops. We don't think it's raccoons, since their M/O is to break down the whole stalk and tear up the ears. The cats will usually jerk the ears down from the stalk. So that just leaves the chickens. Before the next batch starts earing out I'd like a low electric fence put up around it. Ron worried about the hens, but I say to hell with them - zap the crap out of them! I want fresh sweet corn!!

Knitting projects:
  • Washed and blocked Rosey Fingered Dawn shawl. It softened up beautifully, and the bit of pucker that showed up when knitting on the edging disappeared.
  • Decided on Picovoli for the navy King Tut yarn. I'm down to the straight run between waist decreases and increases. Round and round and round and .... at least it's mindless.
  • Opal Strawberry socks - one done, second cast on.

Sewing projects:

  • Navy tonal skirt is finished.
  • Used same pattern for a small floral medium blue skirt (finished), and have a mustard/brown/blue print skirt cut out. These skirts are quick and comfortable, just a gentle flounce at the bottom, slightly A-line, drawstring + 2 narrow rows of elastic.

I've been trying to figure out a place to store all of my shawls that will keep them handy but clean. For Christmas my mother wove a huge melon-style picnic basket with hinged lid. Works perfectly next to the front door, and shows off the basket too.

One of these days I'll come up with some photos...
