Another update

A little more work on the house. Before we can have the final roofing installed, the siding on the porch and dormers needs to be finished - no way to stabilize ladders or scaffolding on a metal roof! So the main bits have been done, with just trim left. Daniel can borrow a Genie or manlift to get to the rest after the roofing is added. This is the number 1 goal - get the roof on before fall rains start! Daniel is already talking about setting up a temporary bed in 'his' room with a space heater. Anyway, once the place is roofed and basically waterproof, we can work inside running wiring, getting HVAC installed (someone else will be doing that), and plumbing. Every time I walk inside, I get more READY. It's a fantastic puzzle, trying to figure out in advance where built-in shelving and other goodies will be, where I'd like to have extra outlets, etc. This weekend we picked up the trim and picked out soffit color/materials - it'll be white steel to match the white window frames. Will be a nice contrast to the evergreen roof and the sandy clay siding. The guy who did our chimney and brick work called about finishing up his part of the job - adding stone outer window sills to match the chimney. They will protrude about 1/2 an inch from the brick. Exciting!

This weekend was also haying in one of the fields. We did this batch as small square bales, and the girls got to use one wagon as a stage while the other was being loaded. Anna drove the tractor while Ron and Daniel bucked and stacked. I got to keep the girlies out of the way - we took a nice long walk in the woods where we found a turtle shell that they filled with acorns. Cara found an empty snail shell too. We walked to one of the bigger trees on the property - a huge oak that must be 5 foot plus diameter. The three of us couldn't touch hands and stretch around it!

Last is a pair of mittens made for the woman who guided my physical therapy. She did such a wonderful job of getting my shoulder back in shape. It's a basic free mitten pattern, used a stash skein of Vintage worsted weight, then used scraps of wool for the embroidery, just eyeballed the main roses to match, then filled in with the green and French knot accents. Start to finish - one afternoon/evening for the mittens, 2 hours or less for the embroidery. I had no idea purple was her favorite color, and she went silly over them. :)

A new family moved in across the breezeway, a couple with two girls. The youngest just turned 10, the older one is (I think) in first year of college. They moved from San Diego nearly 2 months ago... had paid for a moving company to pack up their stuff, then deliver it here. Guaranteed delivery in 21 days. Which turned into nearly 2 months. They had only brought a couple weeks of clothing, nothing that would work in cooler weather. Of course no mattresses or kitchen stuff (pots/pans), no TVs or anything to sit on. It was a nightmare for them. Once it was finally delivered, they were missing items, two pallets worth of stuff! And they got other people's boxes. It will be at least a month before they get the rest of their goods. But I have been the recipient of the wife's cooking already! She is Filipino, and the smell from the door was just incredible. She asked if I'd like to try it, and gave me a big container of noodles with bits of chicken and chopped green onions and who knows what seasoning. DEElicious!! So... I'll be taking over some goodies next time I bake. Sour milk biscuits or popovers get made once a week, and there is no way I can eat them all.

Tomorrow morning I am getting my last wisdom tooth pulled. It has not been causing any problems, but I knew it needed to come out since it's coming in sideways. Had wanted to wait til after the bridgework was completed, maybe the first of the year so dental insurance would pay more. But over the weekend it cracked, a bit came out, and it throbs up into my ear and down into the lymph node in my neck. So... be gone, damn tooth!
