Quick Show and Tell
Inspire Mittens kit from Ewetopia
These were a fun project (kit from Wisconsin!). But don't look too closely! I've hidden (somewhat) the big mistake in the bottom mitt. Oh well, unless you are nit-picking, you won't see it. The yarn is lovely and soft, and hand dyed. The website shows several other color combinations available.
Epic Discussion
I started watching Franklin Habit's vlog on youtube, trying to do them in order from oldest forward. In one of the early episodes, he talks about epic projects. So in that vein, I have been considering what I feel are my 'epic' projects, which I eluded to in the last post. I will probably repeat myself.
- Grandma Ettling's quilt - she embroidered the blocks before I was around, and had stored them with the solid that she planned to put them together with. The blocks seem to be in good shape. They are a floral wreath with some cross stitching, in fuschia and turquoise because no, Grandma did not shy away from bright, loud colors. The bright pink solid though, is 36" cotton, and age has not been kind to it - I can easily push my finger through it. My mother passed the blocks on to me, and I was tasked with actually turning the into a quilt. After several years of feeling around for just the right contrasts, I came up with some very bright fuschia/turquoise Kaffe Fassett mum fabric, with solids to match. The finished size will be 120" square. Woof. Definitely wanted to hand quilt, but don't have room for a big frame, and no way was I going to try basting it myself. So I had it machine 'tacked' by a woman who machine quilts. So far, 3 blocks are finished, using a hoop and having the load on my lap. Working on the embroidered blocks first, then will go back and determine a design for the solid spaces... may end up just being a grid.
- Wool knitted dress - Yarn is Geilsk Tweed in a dark brown with random tweedie flecks. Weight is between sport and DK, and it is working up very nicely, if a little boring. However, it will be a good basic piece. Pattern is Demiting, and employs a unique raglan that works from the center front/back, so the line of increases is not from the shoulder. Looks like it will fit well without being gigantic at the armholes.
- Barn Raising Quilt (afghan) - I have made one of these before (see here!). The squares are all complete minus one that somehow got a moth hole in it! This one will be bordered with black, which I already have.
There won't be much work on any of these until late. There's physical therapy on knee and shoulder at 3:30, then aquacise at the Y for an hour at 6.
