CRASH!!

Two Wednesdays ago I was sat on my couch, looked up to find a crack in the ceiling. Not huge, just about a foot long, and no sagging or anything major. Decided to put in a work order to have someone look at it the next morning. So the evening was knit group, and when I got home around 10, my neighbor was sitting outside and we talked for a bit at my door. Suddenly we heard a “WHUMP” from inside the apartment, opened the door to find the entire ceiling in the living room had collapsed. There were a few curse words spoken, sorry to say. Insulation was everywhere. Called the emergency fix-it number and rousted a poor maintenance guy out to clean it up. He did a pretty good job, and the next morning the on-site contractors came over and started repairing. Gives me the extra stimulus to rearrange and sort through some books and projects.

What a mess.

Saturday I picked up a quilt from Carol, ‘my’ machine quilter. She is great! Very reasonable and fast, and takes the time to trim the excess batting and backing. Makes an easier task of putting on the binding. This morning I stitched the binding to the front side, and will do the handwork this evening. I left another quilt with her, and when I pick it up, I should have a third to drop off. Today I need to pick up a solid navy for a narrow inner border, but already have a light blue for the second wider border and a mottled navy for the back.

Other current projects:

  • Stockholm sweater - kit from last year WI trip. Body to armholes complete, ready to begin shaping for the front neck.
  • Socks - this pair is Lainey’s du Nord Paint Gradient in creamy white fading to blues. One sock done, second past the ribbing.

It’s been horribly hot this week, with heat indices around 110 and more. The plants on the deck get watered nearly every day now. We have had some pop up thunderstorms in the afternoons, which cool things down just a bit, but also adds plenty more humidity.

Yesterday was orientation for some volunteer work. It’s with IHELPSTL, an organization that teaches English to refugees in their home. Mostly women whose husbands work and don’t have access to transportation to get to a class. This first session was to get us familiar with dos and don’t, what to expect, etc. Next session will be learning how to set goals with our client, what resources are available, and the progress reporting process. I’m really excited to be part of this, and hope it works out!

A woman at knit group told me her husband is looking for employees that are stable. The job is processing workman’s comp claims (his company contracts with the state) and following up with status. Apparently the last few recent college grads he’s hired either don’t even show up on the first day of work, or their follow-up reports are very sketchy and incomplete. There is a work from home option, but not sure it is full time or only certain days of the week. Something to think about anyway!

I believe that wraps things up for now!
