Listening to: The bird warbling in her cage and rain.

Hard rain most of the morning, with the temperature around 60. Autumn is definitely in the air even though very few leaves have turned or fallen. It's coming though. There's a crispness, especially in the mornings, and the last few nights of sleeping with windows open has been wonderful. Weather like this energizes me, much like spring, but the prospect of winter suits me better than summer. I can always put on an extra layer, pull on hand-knitted wool socks, or wrap up in a shawl, but in the summer.... well, there is a limit to what you can take off and still be decent in public.

The garden has started slacking off. I picked many butternut squash, and they are curing under the shed roof. Pepper plants are still producing, and there are some tomatoes remaining. The goldfinches have been making quick work of the sunflower heads.

I'm a sucker for starting new projects. In the knitting bag(s) at the moment are three or eleventy projects:

Lexeme in Lustra Triomphe Teal (Berroco leaflet #289) - a cardigan with deep ribbed bottom, ruffled edges, and open from the waist up.

Quant in Kureyon (Knitty) - entrelac head covering to keep my ears toasty this winter.

Gail/ Nightsongs shawl in Malabrigo Lace Geranio - a Christmas gift.

Swirl Shawl in Jojoland Melody - on a slight hold until other projects are completed.

Saffron Cables in Valley Yarns Birkshire Ming Blue (Interweave Knits Fall 2006) - for Daniel... his choice of design and color.

There are also various scarves and socks here and there that I work on whenever I need something that doesn't require much concentration.

As if I need something else to occupy my time, I am looking into purchasing a spinning wheel. Last Friday I took a couple hours off to visit the local knitting/weaving/spinning shop for a quick demo and lesson. I think this is something I can actually do, and that I won't tire of too easily. I'm in no rush, so I can make an intelligent decision on which wheel to purchase.
