OoOo That Smell

Listening to: Lead Belly Irene from "Where Did You Sleep Last Night"

Olfactory Observations
Smell is a very powerful sense that has intrigued me quite a bit during the last year. We are attracted to or repelled by people based partially on their odor; scents stimulate us or relax us. They stir up old memories and attach to new events.

This morning I turned on the furnace for the first time this season. The smells of a whole summer's worth of burnt dust filled the apartment, not unpleasantly so. Coffee is brewing, zapping my brain even more awake. A friend visited this week who always smells like grilled onions even after a shower; again, not in a bad way.

Monday morning when I walked into the apartment, I was hit with the smell of something bad. Since I always take out trash before leaving Friday afternoon, I knew that wasn't the culprit. I soon discovered one rotten potato in the bag in the pantry. It had liquified and oozed all over the floor. Ugh, what a mess.

My grampa did not have a sense of smell. I don't know if it was the result of an illness, or had just faded over time, but I remember that he could not smell the Thanksgiving turkey dinner. How sad, because the scent of Gramma's turkey and dressing could set anyone salivating!

Recently Cape Girardeau hosted the annual SEMO District Fair. Walking through the vending area could knock anyone over... brots, onions and peppers sizzling on open grills, spiral cut potatoes deep-frying, pizza, tacos, bbq, cotton candy whirling and fluffing, funnel cakes, corndogs, the list is nearly endless. The family always walks through, trying to decide what to have for dinner, and finding something better after already eating. The last stop of the evening is Malone's Salt Water Taffy. The sticky sweetness fills the air as we watch the machine twisting the thick white taffy.

Knitting Content
I've been a busy knitter, working mostly on larger projects, but also cranking out socks on commutes. I will update later.
